Subject: Please Help Me - Configuring a Sound Card Properly for DOS
Comment:

Hi there. Thanks for your time.

I'm trying to get a program to run in DOS (Caprice32 - an Amstrad Emulator) but I get no sound.

In its help file, it mentions the line in my Autoexec file SHOULD be this:

SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330 E620 T6

However, my line ACTUALLY reads like this:

SET BLASTER=A220 I2 D3 H7 P330 T6

I think this is the problem. I have a feeling that the slot my sound card needs (whatever it's called - I'm a bit of a beginner) is being used by my modem in Windows.

Is there a way of setting up a separate file (Autoexec maybe) that sets the sound card settings to the ones needed, so if I start in MS-DOS (or configure the program to run via an MS-DOS restart) then temporarily, I should be OK? I'll never need to use my modem from MS-DOS, so if I can somehow get two autoexec files - one for windows, one for DOS, maybe this would be the answer.

Could someone please help me? Or at least point me in the right direction...

Thank you.

Toby Behan.

(PS - My computer is relatively new - I run Windows 98 - 400 Celeron CPU - 64M RAM etc..)

well, just write down your old settings, then type in the ones that "should" be there. you almost definatly need a sound driver as well, if you're only using that one statement, and no drivers for your card, that may also be the problem

Hi,

In Win98 open Start->Programs->DOS Prompt, in the DOS box type in SET and press ENTER. Look for BLASTER variable values. These are the actual values your card is configured in Win98. Then try to run you game in DOS box under Win98 and use these values to configure the game.

Good luck, Igor

1) create an autoexec.dos with the correct SET BLASTER statement. This will only be used when you boot to DOS.
2) create a boot disk
-go to a dos prompt
-put a floppy in the drive
-at C:\> type SYS A:
-copy over your autoexec.bat and config.sys files to the floppy
-edit the autoexec.bat to the correct SET BLASTER statement (don't forget the driver info)

Before you change anything, print out your autoexec.bat and config.sys files for reference later. Restart your computer, at "Startings Windows" press F8, choose #7(Dos prompt in safe mode). Type "type config.sys >prn". Without quotes. Same for config.sys. Now you have reference. This should be done before ever adding any new hardware or software. And as always "have a boot disk".

type config.sys > prn
