pinging a computer if you don't know it's IP/hostname is a bit like calling someone's name if you don't know it. You have to know more about the computer you want to ping.

In NT, the command net statistics will display all the computernames in your domain, then you can just do: ping computername If you're talking pinging someone on the internet then you're SOL.
