I am trying to access my Netgear FA511 PCMCIA card in DOS on my AST 800N laptop, but don't even get a link light. Does this mean my PCMCIA port isn't working?

You require "card and Socket Services" software, see:

CardSoft for DOS release 5.30.11
http://www.systemsoft.com/l-2/l-3/products-other.htm

CardWare for DOS/Windows 3.x, Release 7.0

Just a thought is the card actually compatible? older laptops do not support 32 bit cards....................

You can also try the best version of Phoenix Card Manager -- PCM Version 4.01 (note that PC-DOS 2000 only includes PCM version 3.01 for PCMCIA support, but here is its version 4.01):

http://newdos.yginfo.net/dosware/pcm.zip

It's freeware I believe, because its original files are downloadable from this official page:

You don't need Socket Services if you are going to use the "Enabler.exe" That's what it does. You could pass it some arguments though. "enabler /irq:12 /iop:300 /cbs:off"
(or enabler /?).

There's a "start.bat" in pktdrv folder might help.
