Not clones. Clones are identical copies. DOS was a major improvement to CP/M. CP/M had many glaring shortcomings. DOS was designed to be more "general purpose" in comparison to CP/M. Digital Research was also very slow in producing new and improved versions of CP/M causing Seattle Computer Products to create QD-DOS which was quickly renamed 86-DOS version 1 which Microsoft bought and retitled MS-DOS (sold by IBM as PC-DOS).
