This actually has more to do with Windows than DOS.

Compressed drives are not partitions, just a 'Compressed Volume File' (CVF) - a very big file that is interpreted as a drive - and also something that should be avoided like the plague, as the likelihood of problems is large.

You need to 'uncompress' the drive - should be an option in Windows, although if there is insufficent space, you'll need to free some up.

Give me ambiguity or give me something else

"lets dont make it a long story of it""

Fine by me - post in the Win9x section maybe - although " i had to format my drive with windows on it.." & "i think its all solved by myself by now but theres still one thing." defies ready understanding.

I really wish I knew exactly what you're talking about, but your attempts to illuminate do more harm than good.

Fdisk and start over maybe? I have no idea as to the condition of this disk, other than you managed to compress & format it (somehow) - if so, nothing to lose

I formatted it and tried to reinstall windows... it didnt work... it had to reboot after install but my problem was that it wont boot so i got a boot disk and then formatted D:)

Back in the day I found Stacker4 to be not bad, as far as those things go - better than the drvspace/dblspace mess anyways. Still a risky business, and the worst thing to do ever is to compress the entire C: drive, because it can be a nightmare to undo (if at all).

FAT32 drives can't be compressed - this must be a tiny FAT16 disk or partition

Anyways, afaik, there is no DOS tool to uncompress a Windows Drvspace 3 volume, assuming that's what this is.

It's not clear if C: and D: are different physical drives or just partitions on the same drive. If D: is an actual drive, then just go ahead and remove the partition on C: using fdisk - it won't do anything to the 2nd drive (unless you get them mixed up)

Not really sure of much here - if there is data on the drive, one prospect might be to slave it in a Windows system (with drive compression installed as an option) and see if sense can be made of the mess.

Otherwise, lesson learned and cut your losses - start over completely.

Yup,

Stacker was about as good as it got.
