Hmmm,
Good Idea to park your H/D before moving your machine. Sort of like moving a record player with a record still on it and the needle still on the record.

Although the H/D surface is not ever touched in normal operation.....parking for moving is a good idea.

Create a dir called park. Then before shutting your system down cd park. Then just turn it off. Park being a dir is allocated enough space to take care of any movement of the h/d during the move. Of course it should be kept empty.....or as a test have some text files in it to check once you have re-setup your system.

Not all to sure, but I believe win95 and 98 go to a blank space when shutting down automaticaly......but older machines running just dos do not.

Hope this of some help.

Hds which are relatively new park automatically when you shut down the computer.

There is no need to "undo" the parking, because any disk access does this automatically.

If your hd needs parking, don't rely on reading an empty directory. This will temporary position the head somewere in the middle of the hd. First, if that dir is present in the disk cache, there will be no effect. Secondly, any hd access (by the disk cache for example), will move the head. Third, even if the head remains there, when you move the computer you may damage that area of the hd. The hardware "landing zone" is in a safe place outside the usable area of the hd.

I have a very old AT with a 20Meg hd, and for this one parking is done using the CMOS Setup. I think I once had a separate parking utility, but don't know were is it. If I find it (little chance), I will send it to you.

There are various "park" programmes on the go.
The usual syntax is (at the command prompt)
park or alternatively diskpark...The latter gives you the opportunity (assuming you havent switched the pc off) is to press the spacebar 3 times then the system will return to normal operation.
