Subject: opening my cdrom drawer in dos mode |
Comment: Hi, The button to open my CDROM drawer doesn't work any more and I have problems with Windows (98se) whereby it freezes upon loading. I can't reformat my C drive to clear the freezing because then I won't have access to open the CD drawer. I need the CDROM drive to re-install windows. Short of buying another CDROM, do you know if there's any way of forcing the CDROM to open using a DOS command? Apart from the faulty button it works fine in every other way. Thanx in advance... MARTIN

Reply: (edit)there should be a small whole on front of the drive where you can push a thin metal rod into (or strong plastic) and force the door open... when you power the computer back up, it should close again. you can copy the files you need from cd (like windows setup files) to the hard drive before exiting to DOS. you can find a DOS cd-rom audio player prehaps on some abandonware site or the simtel DOS archive and many should have the eject command.

Reply: (edit)Here's a site that might help, but I haven't investigated the utilities. http://www.simtel.net/pub/pd/9617.shtml
