Comment:

I have a Compaq 3/25 lite that when I try to install 6.22 and 3.11 I get a HIMEM error. I think I need an older version. Help!

Could you be more specific - what error exactly, and what seems to cause it?

DOS622 will install on pretty much any Intel based PC, from an XT on up.

Load setver.exe in your config.sys by adding a line:
devicehigh=C:\dos\setver.exe
Check to see if you have it in the dos directory and change the path if need be.
Go to C dos prompt and add a line in the setver table to adjust for an older version of a file:
setver himem.sys 3.30
The dos will believe you are using dos 3.30.You get a message saying the table is updated. If you need to delete or use other setver options :
setver /?
You will read all the options available. If you ever use more than one option with a dos file leave a blank space between them so they are recognised and used:
scandisk /A /B /C (This is the same for all dos files).
Good luck.

himem uses memory above the 1mb mark. If your ancient Compaq has less memory than 1mb, then himem has nothing to use, hence the error message.

If you do indeed have less than 1mb of memory, you need to forget himem.sys and use the emm386.exe memory driver in your config.sys file. emm386 uses memory between 640k and 1mb. himem is over memory over 1mb

Well, Preston, his system specs clearly show 16 Mb of RAM. That feature was instituted so that we wouldn't have to be guessing all of the time.

Have a nice day ;)
