I would just like to know of a few commands to use or some web sites to get old programs/help so that I can skrew around with it and mabey learn so stuff. If any one knows can help thanks.

Try this site: http://fchao.tripod.com/tutorials/ I checked out the one by Paul Butterwick should be good for you. TIP: that is a Tripod free account, so I recommend you save the pages as text files, in case it disappears at any time.

I'm not sure about DOS 1.3 but 6.0+ can be found here http://www.easydos.com/dosindex.html

Maybe some of them work for you.

Are you sure of the version? MS-DOS 1.x dates to about 1980 and was very limited in its usage - MS-DOS 3.3 dates from 1987 and would probably be the oldest DOS you would normaly encounter

Type VER at the DOS prompt to find out.

If you have at least a 386 Laptop then upgrading it to MS-DOS 6.x may be an option.

If you really do have such an old version of dos, please make some copies of it including the hidden files if they are present on that version.

Use Format /S etc if available then copy the rest of the files.

For historical purposes such versions should be saved. We recently had a request for an old copy and the oldest I had was version 2.?.

If you are successful, I would like a copy please.

Check your e-mail.

Good luck - Keep us posted.

Thanks for the offer of a copy the dos, but I have that one. Visit www.bootdisk.com to download version 6.2x if you decide to upgrade.

Printer cables are not 'old' and should be easily obtainable.

Usually older pc's have a parallel port for the printer with the standard/original (32? contact) centronics connector. Later ones use a 25 pin rs232 connector for economy.

If your printer has a serial rather than parallel interface, you use the pc's serial/COM port (there may be 2), which have rs232 connectors (25 or 9 pins). It is easy and cheaper to make a cable for these than buy, one as only a few wires are used. Watch the connections, as at the printer end they can differ, while at the pc end they are a standard. You also have to use a couple of MODE statements in AUTOEXEC.BAT.

The serial port on the printer may be a pcb card option that can be removed, leaving its parallel port then operational.

You may have problems getting a laser or inkjet printer to function, best to use a dot matrix.

Note: *DO NOT* connect a serial device to a parallel port or vice versa as something will blow.

Good luck - keep us posted.
