Comment:

I have an old dos program which is used for programming a Westinghouse PLC. It works great on an old machine running DOS, but won't work on my relatively new laptop (PIII running Windows 98). It keeps giving me a file error when I try to open one of the necessary files.

Without specifics about the particular program, are there general guidelines about such problems?

Thanks,

Mark

You may need to exit to the dos prompt to run it. But you may have already tried that?

Restart your computer in DOS mode and it SHOULD work (not sure if it was what u meant Mark p!). If not, I think it's the program's fault.

Here's an update: The program runs if I restart the computer in DOS mode, and if I store the files on a floppy disk (i.e. not on the hard drive). In a DOS window it won't run regardless of where the files are located.

Is this possibly caused by a FAT 32 vs FAT 16 issue?

Thanks,
Mark

You could be short of DOS file handles. Add the line FILESHIGH=99 (that should be enough)to C:\CONFIG.SYS and then re-boot and try it. I'm not sure what the thing you're programming is, but there can be issues with opening COM ports in DOS under 98. If you have that problem e-mail me and i'll give you the fix
