Hi there,
I want to partition and install new OS (w2k) on my new machine (Note: this new machine's HD is already formated !). first I inserted win98 start up disk which I created from my 98 machine. But the new machine always displays an error message saying:
"NTLDR is missing press any key to restart" when I press any key the same message repeats it self. And I never go beyond this point. Please who can tell me what this problem is and how to correct it?
Note: the BIOS settings are all in other.

Set your bios to boot from the CD drive if it's not already. ie; A, HDD, CD. Or, CD, A, HDD. Just ensure the CD drive is in the boot sequence. Eliminate the floppy and boot with the cd.

From the following you can read how to make the boot diskettes for Win 2000.
http://www.wilsonmar.com/1w2kins.htmManual Diskette Installation
Make Boot-up Diskettes
If your CD is NOT bootable, create a set of 4 boot-up diskettes on another computer Use one of the two programs on the MAKEBOOT folder within the setup CD of any Windows 2000 product. Where x: is the CD drive:
c:> x:
x:> cd \bootdisk
x:> makebt32 a:
Disk #1 is bootable and contains CD drivers. You will get the following message if you use setup diskettes created with makeboot.exe instead of makebt32.exe on a machine with Windows 9x OS already installed:
File \ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded
The error code is 7Good luck.

i have the same problem. i was trying to upgrade my operating system from 98 to xp, the computer did not take the cd, and now i am having a problem to start the system on because it gives me the error massage "NTLDR is missing, press any key". now i am trying to use the bootable floppy disk to boot the pc but it does not take that neither. i think the bios is set to the cd rom. and i can not change the bios to bootable floppy neither because my computer does not go to that screen all it says is NTLDR is missing press.....
could someone help me on this?
that would be great

I believe that file is the NT Loader, which is partof the Win2000 system. If you have a bootable floppy, try copying the system files to it, using this:
a> sys c:
and hit enter
Wait and see if a response "system files transferred" appears. If so, you might be able to boot up from CD and install new operating system...
Hope it helps.

Howdy, firstly swapping motherboards and trying to use the same HD with XP already installed and configured is always going to cause headaches - unless you are replacing motherboards of the same sort. Have had this problem before and although I didn't receive the "NTLDR missing" error I had to reformat the drive.
Try this though - After getting to the prompt by choosing R for repair. Make sure that you are in the D:\windows path for XP (assuming that XP is on D: and that you r hard disk is readable).
Do as follows:
Change to your CD drive - by typing "e:" of "f:" etc.
Change to i386 path by typing "cd i386"
Copy necessary files to root path (d: in this case) of winxp installation by typing:copy ntldr d:
copy ntdetect.com d:Change back to you windows path:
d:
cd windowsRun fixboot by typing
fixboot - and follow the prompts
Try restarting machine - if still nothing - go back into recovery console by booting from cd and pressing r again.
Then runfixmbr - and follow the prompts
Restart machine again. If its going to work it should work now - otherwise I'm sorry but your looking at a re-format.
If it does work but you are getting an annoying boot.ini message everytime you restart your PC now go back into recovery console as above and run bootcfg
type "bootcfg" and follow the prompts - make sure you select d:\windows as the boot installation.
Good luck.
