Ok... here's my problem: I have MS-DOS 6.22 on 3 floppy disks, and I have an old Gateway Solo 2000 laptop, the problem with the laptop is this: I made a boot floppy once, and the computer never turned on again... So I took it to my uncle to look at it, and he ended up FDisk'ing the whole hardrive, so now I only have the lowliest of DOS on the laptop. OK... here's what I need help with: When I go to install MS-DOS, I get this message that says:
"NTLDR is missing
Press any key to restart"But no matter what I do, I can't get a working copy of NTLDR on there... I put a copy of MY windows 2000 NTLDR on the hardrive with minor success... but then it tried to look for my WINNT directory, and that didn't help me out much.
Please, if anyone knows anything that I could do... It would be much appreciated (Did I spell that right?)

I think it is time to undertake a format of the hard drive and it will need to be fat16, or look ar following for alternative DOS:
http://www.computing.net/dos/wwwboard/forum/14369.html

If there is any Long File Names (LFN) or FAT16X/FAT32 drives on your system, then you should NOT install MS-DOS 6.22 or below. Instead, try install MS-DOS 7.10 if you have got the license. The downloads and more information are or will be available from this page:

You are saying that you the 3 DOS Floppies. Do one good thing,
1. Boot with the First Floppy
2. Do an fdisk and create partitions in your HDD and restart the M/C
3. Format each and every drive you have created.
4. Again you start with the First Floppy, you will find the DOS Installation happening automaticallly....
Keep inserting the other disks when prompted...Jaz

Well... when I boot from the first floppy of my 3 floppy set... it automatically takes me to the "NTLDR missing" error, at no point in the boot does a command line appear that would let me enter an FDisk command... Also... when I have no floppy in the drive and nothing for the computer to boot from, I get an error stating: "Missing operating system".
Well... thanks for trying to help... I hope I can get this figured out...

Although... I do have an MS-DOS boot disk, so I AM able to FDisk it... can I format my HD from the FDisk command? Or is there another command I should use? Also... should I use Fat16 or Fat32?

FAT16 or FAT32 doesn't matter for newer versions of DOS, like MS-DOS 7.1+. FAT32 is usually better and more efficient than FAT16. But very old versions of DOS, like MS-DOS 6.x, will not support FAT32 drives.

You can't format your drive using FDISK.exe. FORMAT.COM is needed for that while FDISK.exe is for creating/deleting partitions.
BTW: What's the size of your HD? Note that FAT16 can't be used on larger drives, but FAT32 can.

I have a ~750Mb HD... How do I choose between FAT16 and FAT32 when I run format.com?
Here's exactly what I did...
A:\Format C:
/*(I used A:\ because I got a boot image off the internet)*/Then after that, It gave me no choice as to whether I wanted FAT16 or FAT32
(also... I think it was a MS-DOS 6.22 boot image)
But it DID format... now, when I insert Disk 001 and type "A:\setup.exe" the computer restarts, like it should, then runs the setup, but I still get that dang "NTLDR missing" message... If anyone here might know as to where off the internet I might be able to download NTLDR for MS-DOS 6.22... PLEASE let me know...

There is no such thing as "NTLDR for MS-DOS 6.22"! NTLDR is only for WinNT/2K/XP+.
Also, FORMAT won't give you choice between FAT16 and FAT32!
To create FAT32 drives, boot your system from a *standard* MS-DOS 7.10 boot disk (which is available from that page), and at A:\>, type: "FDISK /FPRMT", or just type "FDISK" and then answer YES to that Large Hard Disk question. Then create DOS partitions using FDISK.

OH MAN! How did I miss that link!??! Well... that was the answer that I needed... I'm installing MS-DOS 7.10 right now... and I'm seeing a screen that says "Made by Wengier and someone else" (I can't remember exactly... I just restarted)... Am I talking to someone that actually worked on this program? 'cause that is awesome.
Thanks man... It works now and i'll be telling everyone about MS-DOS 7.10...

"albeit rather forceful :)"
Yes, but he gets tired too once in a while. He ~lives~ here. And many are glad he does.

This page has been helpfull to me but i get the same problem even after reformating (FAT16), i had windows 98 on the HD, i said no to the large file question, split the HD into 2 610MB partitions, one active primary and one extended logical, i then got the DOS 6.22 boot disk from bootdisk.com and yet i still get NTLDR missing, what is it i am doing wrong? Please help this simpleton. Thanks
I believe there is a linux utility out there somewhere that wipes the HD of any info previous MS OS may have left, does anyone know of this and where it can be found? this maybe the answer to may irritating problem.

I found this about NTLDR missing @ computerhope.com
"Solutions:
Computer is booting from a non-bootable source
Many times this error is caused when the computer is attempting to boot from a non-bootable floppy disk or CD-ROM. First verify that no floppy diskette is in the computer, unless you are attempting to boot from a diskette.
If you are attempting to boot from a floppy diskette and are receiving this error message it is likely that the diskette does not have all the necessary files and/or is corrupt.
If you are attempting to install Windows XP or Windows 2000 and are receiving this error message as the computer is booting verify that your computer BIOS has the proper boot settings. For example, if you are attempting to run the install from the CD-ROM make sure the CD-ROM is the first boot device, and not the hard disk drive."well i reformated the floppy and created the disk 1 etc, but i no longer get the same error i know get this messege after 'Verifying DMI pool data'
Remove disks or other media.
Press any key to restart'After spending 1/2 an hour looking for the 'any' key (joke-honest), i get this when key is pressed- Nonsystem disk or disk error etc,
Swings and roundabouts.

I am newbie in setting comp... Fdisk only allow me to do one drive( dont even know c: or d:) nway... i have all setup done but dont know how can i make another partition after primary partition is made.
Also i have many problems sort it. I can get windows XP back on after formatting the whole comp (inc c: d: drivers.)
My question is it normal to have 2Gb on RamDrive which is d: drive. and c: HDD primary partition with 78GB?
Can i make an extended drive after installed windows XP?
Hope u can understand my questions?
Wengier i read many of your post and you are very greatful helper...

Respectfully, Dan

First: try the new DOSes like 7.1 and on!
Then: For that Problem, The Solution:
Always try to install oldest (here:DOS)
FIRST! Then the XP/2000/NT/Linux/Unix Systems
using Bootmanagers! If not Possible (cause
DOS must be installed on a running system)
DO SO: Install DOS. Make a Bootdisk (you need it after this to start in DOS!).
Insert 2000/XP cd and choose /Repair automaticly. The NTFS-Loader will be
reinstalled. Due to it moves the DOS-Start-
Section on your HDD away from the cluster it was on (i think,it was CL53...?) and some
OS cant handle that(like MS-Dos,i think)
you might need the Bootdisk, might be not if
your DOS can handle it. The Bootloader should show following while startup:
1. Win2000 (or XP)
2. Linux
3. Win98
4. MS-DOS
or something that way, depending on what OS installed and what sequence (if Linux is first installed, you see the Linux-bootmanager,that may handle this in a different way).
Hope here are no questions left?
I tested that under Win2000Server,WinME,Win98 and an 32bit PTS-Dos and Linux 4.2 in
2001 and it worked fine.

ok heres the deal with my problem, got my mom a new hd from work, went to install it... her floppy drive is shot, and i only have windows 2000 pro and xp on cd at the moment. so i used windows me, what she has installed on there now, to fdisk, then the windows 2000 pro cd to format it, don't ask why, i threw the drive on the secondry cable and xcopyed the disk over to the other one. for some reason i couldn't disable the virtual memory but from what i can tell the only file that doesn't come over is the swap file. everything else went right and i put the new hd on the primary cable, when i started up again the bios made the changes for the new disk on the primary cable then went to load windows, stopped and said ntldr is missing, i'm not sure how this is working out of windows me and there is no winnt folder or anything. i can still access the disk on the secondry drive but it won't boot. any ideas????
