All 16 bits operating system tools like scandisk and defrag must never be used on a partition where you installed a 32 bits operating system like NT4 or Windows 9X even if you successfully dual boot both 16 bits dos and NT4.Use the tools from a Windows 9X boot disk for scandisk and download a free copy of DefragMentor Lite for NT4 from:
http://www.defragmentor.com/home/en/main.asp
Good luck.

Petit Jean: Of course this is not true. Please don't say like this, thanks.

The reason for his problem is simply because the DOS version he used is so old that it doesn't support LFN (Long File Names) nor FAT32. The disk tools from older versions of DOS will DESTROY any existing LFNs on the disks, and they won't work with FAT32 & LBA partitions either, as I have said before. Disk tools from newer versions of *16-bit* DOS (e.g. MS-DOS 7.10), such as SCANDISK and CHKDSK, will work fine with 32-bit operating systems.

The disk tools from NT4 and Win9x should work with LFN too. A copy of defragmenter for NT4 is available from the link provided by Petit Jean.

There is no LFN & FAT32 compatible defrag tool for *pure* DOS so far. FORTUNATELY, there IS a defragmenter that works with 16-bit DOS+Win3.x with FULL LFN & FAT32 support! Since this DEFRAG completely supports LFN and FAT32 & LBA drives, you may feel free to use it. It should work safely on any FAT12/16/32 drives (with or without LFN present) from Win3.x, so DEFRAG is no longer a problem for a system running DOS+Win3.x only. It's downloadable from this link:

http://newdos.yginfo.net/dosware/defragw.exe

Note that this LFN & FAT32 compatible DEFRAG will only work with MS-DOS 7.10 + Win3.x or similar. It will refuse to work from MS-DOS 6.x + Win3.x, since older versions of DOS (6.x or eariler) are not compatible with LFN & FAT32 at all! Please upgrade your DOS version if necessary. For a list of FAT32 compatible DOS, please read this page:

P.S. This is a modified version of DEFRAG from WinME with LFN & FAT32 support. The original version will not work from Win3.x, but this modified one will work with DOS7+Win3.x.
