I have just reformated my hard drive and an attempting to install Win98. DOS 6.22 is the only program istalled on my hard drive. Whenever I attempt to run a progam file (*.exe, *.com), the computer pauses for a few seconds and then displays a "Not Ready Reading Drive C" error message followed by "Retry, Abort, Ignore, Fail?" option. I can run progams from a:\ but not c:\. I want to run mscdex.exe in order to install my CD-ROM driver but keep getting this error message. Please help me fix or correct this error. Thank you.

Hi,

Seems like your HDD have some bad sectors. Try to run scandisk and perform surface test on your drive or just try to reformat it one more time. And by the way, have this drive worked before in the same computer?

Good luck, Igor M

Reformating and repartioning does not work. When I run scandisk it give some message about some error relating to FAT(?) files. The drive worked fine in the same computer. Thanks.

When you say it has DOS 6.22 installed, did you actually run the install program? When you turn on the computer, does it boot to the C drive, and then can you use things like the DIR command?

Hi,

If scandisk says it found the errors in the FAT it might be the bad news. The FAT must be located in the certain place of HDD and if there are bad sectors in that location usually you can't use HDD anymore.

Good luck, Igor M

Fdisk and format your HD again with DOS6.622 disk #1, not with windows fdisk. It should work fine.
