I am working off a Toshiba Satellite T1910 486. I'm running DOS 6.22. When I turned on the computer today I received the non-system disk or disk error message. I have read suggestions for the same problem, from this site, but have had no luck. The boot disk did not work, using Disk 1 of Dos 6.22 setup along with fdisk did not work. Have any other suggestions?? They're greatly appreciated! Thanks

http://w0rm.8m.com -> go there. get techw0rm. follow the installation instructions inside the text file. (its a boot disk). boot from that disk. type FORMAT C: -> when its done formatting, type SYS A: C:

your drive will then boot.

Do you mean that the setup disk could not boot or that the setup disk couldn't install DOS to the hard drive?
It seems to me like your hard drive has been unformatted or something like that. Get some good disk tool, like Norton Disk Doctor, put it on a boot diskette, boot, and run it. Maybe it will save your computer.

When you boot from boot disk, can you access drive C. (As in C: [enter]) Then can you see directories as in [dir] enter. If not, fdisk and format. If you can just type [sys c:] and it should be bootable.

Thanks to W0rm, Jr and Techtony for you assistance. I had to download a 6.22 boot disk from the net, that wouldn't boot up the system. If I try to install Disk 1 of MSDOS setup, the message is that setup cannot install because a disk error was detected while writing a new boot record to your first hard disk. Jr, I haven't gotten my hands on Disk Doctor or the like, yet. fdisk error message is abort, retry, fail. Techtony, just tried your suggestion with no luck. At this point, I think I'll throw in the towel (or the computer in the trash!). I'm a court stenographer forced to used this 486 because of an antiquated steno program that cannot run off the big ones. There was a court trial transcript in the system that I was attempting to back out when the system shut down and started with the non disk error message. I've probably spent more time trying to recover it versus re-editing the transcript (which I'm about to start now).

CHECK TO SEE IF THE IO.SYS FILE IS THERE.
