I got a compter for free, which worked fine and gave me the DOS c: prompt, but when I got it home and booted it up, it gave me the message non system disk or disk error. I have tried booting it with a disk and then taking the disk out and "press any key" but this does not seem to make a dif. After some research, I beleive that I may need to re-install DOS, but have no idea how to do that, or where to download it. If this is not true, then any help would be much appreciated! Thanks

I'd say that the HDD is on it's way out. I have a '286 which has exactly the same erratic behaviour.
Although it could just be a case of the system files being corrupted, and as you mentioned above re-installing DOS would help.
I'd recommend that you use a boot disk and run scandisk on the HDD.
I will post back later telling you where to download a boot disk from.

Ok go here: http://www.w0rm.8m.com/. Click on "DOWNLOAD.HTM" then "Boot Disks" and download "TechW0rm.
Get a blank floppy disk and insert it into the drive.
Extract the files somewhere and run techw0rm.bat, then hit "n" whenever it asks you a question.

Restart and when you get to the DOS prompt type "scandisk c: /surface" and hit enter. See if it comes up with some errors.

They got off track. When you can boot from a floppy
Type sys a: c: You will see system transferred. Problem solved

Doesn't always work, ask yourself why the system files would become corupted after the machine has been moved.

I had my new COMPAQ laptop home from the office to work on some spreadsheets today. I was then going to take a trial run of a presentation with the LitePro. When I rebooted I got this "disk error" message. I had only shut the machine down for 10 minutes, any ideas what could have happened or what I can do (or how serious the problem might be)?

Try response number 5, but do a scandisk first, surface scan (from DOS). Boot disk available from link in response 3.
Last point this thread was dead long ago. I just happened to still have it listed in "My Computing.Net". For future reference it's better to start a new one in the DOS forum.
