Comment:

I have a 486DX machine running on DOS6.22. For some strange reason it is not willing to create usable UMB's during the startup procedure.

The first 3 lines of my config.sys read:
DEVICE=C:\HIMEM.exe
DEVICE=C:\EMM386.exe NOEMS NOVCPI
DOS=HIGH,UMB

I tried different parameters for the emm386 program, but nothing works. Why does it work on all other machines except for this one ?
Can it be a hardware problem ?

Have you stepped through the start up to see what error messages you get from any of the lines? Post the messages here and will try to figure out.

There are no error messages as far as I can see. Everything works fine, except I have 0 kB upper memory available.

You may be infected with a virus. I had the same problem with a work PC running W311. I installed a anti-virus program, and everything went back to normal.
