Hi all,
I have what sounds like an easy problem:
hp pavilion 6830, Intel Celeron, 64 MB ram, 20 MB hdd.
Installed multiboot system (RPM 2.43): DOS 6.22 and can multiboot to Windows Me (have other partitions, but not formatted, made them hidden).
Was able to install DOS files from CDROM during Netware 4.1 install, but then had problem getting past the network card and driver installation, so I tried going on...
Could not continue install and cannot see CDROM drive any more.

CD spins: you can hear motor when CD inserted. Cannot see it in Windows Me either.

Originally I was using sbide.sys for driver, but when this problem happend I switched to oakcdrom.sys (came with system). Removed CDROM drive and put it back in. Still bad. Checked boot setup, looks ok: set it to search (auto) or (CDROM), but still no good.

My next step is to replace drive with one from system I don't use anymore.

Any suggestions before I do?
Joe

Hello agian,
Couldn't wait, already tried new (old, but use to work) CDROM drive, but didn't help. Light comes on and can hear it spin like other drive, but does not show up in DOS or Windows Me, same messages too. Naturally I'm putting old drive back in, but what now? Maybe I'll plug it into the hard drive slot...?
help..........

Guess what?
You guessed it, all done. I think.
Installed drive in hard drive position and set up jumpers accordingly (removed hard drive), and it worked. Swapped cables (used CDROM cable), still worked. Put back hard drive, only this time setup CDROM drive as slave (same cable, controller), and it worked.

The connector looks good, I don't know what to say. Could be the bus (circuit). I really don't know what to say, except that it's working now, in a different configuration that is.

All I need to do now is put my old CDROM drive back in. All this playing around was with an other drive I had. I've been playing around with this for a couple of days now, but when I decided to ask for online help, I really tried what I knew I should have tried all along, some good old fassion swapping. Anyway, I am still unemployed, if anyone here knows of a company in need of CNE with A+ Certification, give me an email.
Good luck and have fun.
