Primary SCSI ID#3 Plextor CDRom PX4XCS Primary SCSI ID#4 Plextor CDRom PX4XCS Tried loading IDE/ATAPI CD ROM Device Driver Version 2.14 on suggestion from this forum. Got the following messages. ERROR: No cd rom drivers detected at all. ERROR: device drivers aborts loading. C:\> C:\DOS\SMARTDRV.EXE /X Device driver not found: MSCD001 No valid cd rom device drivers selected. If anyone could please help me I would really appreciate it. Please keep in mind that I am a REAL NOVICE. Thanks again to all who have tried to help me solve my problem.

Reply: (edit)You need aspi drivers for a scsi cdrom. Download the dos drivers for you particular host adapter at the manufacturer's website. A basic example for an Adaptec 1940U host adapter config.sys device=c:\Adaptec\aspi8dos.sys device=c:\aspicd.sys /d:plextor autoexec.bat c:\dos\mscdex /d:plextor

Reply: (edit)Visit powerload for general CD-ROM Advice and MSCDEX.EXE if you need it: http://www.powerload.fsnet.co.uk/cdrom.htm You can also try Adaptec Support Pages at: http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/faqindex.html Or download Adaptec SCSI DOS Drivers at: ftp://ftp.adaptec.digisle.net/scsi/dos/dosdrvr.exe

Reply: (edit) You are not specific enough. DO you have a Plextor CD-ROM? Is it SCSI? You show it with two SCSI addresses on the controller--at least I assume that is what it is. Jumpers on the back of the CD-ROM select the SCSI address; 3 or 4 should be selected. The driver is a file that is entered as a DEVICE line in the CONFIG.SYS file. Do you have the file on your hard drive and the line in your config.sys? (The device line looks like DEVICE=C:\PLEXTOR.SYS execpt this SYS file is invented) If you like email me at fred6008@earthlink.net with whether your CD-ROM is SCSI or IDE and if ide whether it has its own controller board or is entered in the bios. It is my experience that you are not going to get an expeditious repair reading internet literature.

Reply: (edit) I sent you an answering email and it came back. The basic problem seems to be that you do not have the correct device line in the config.sys and an MSCDEX.EXE line in the autoexec.bat. You can't load the IDE device driver because you have a SCSI CD-ROM. You need a driver that usually ends in .SYS that works with your controller and CD-ROM. Send me a correct email address and I will send you a SCSI CD-ROM driver that works on most controllers. Then the correct entries will be DEVICE=C:\SYMCD.SYS /D:SYM001 in the CONFIG.SYS and in the AUTOEXEC.BAT you would Enter C:\DOS\MSCDEX.EXE /D:SYM001 As far as I can tell this is what you are missing. Of course, your driver will have a slightly different name.

Reply: (edit)You have to load scsi device drivers in the correct order. The aspi manager for any host adapter is first followed by the cdrom driver or other device drivers such as scanners or tape drives. Read the bios string as your machine boots to determine the manufacturer of the host adapter and get the drivers specific to your adapter. The host adapter string will follow the POST of the computer.

Reply: (edit)The primary problem is the Compaq computer. LOL Start a new thread with what you've tried thus far. In general, a cdr101 error is a drive that's ready, but can't read the cd for one reason or another. If the drive worked fine, but recently died, try reinstalling the drivers. This case could be a range of problems from a bad drive to a bad disc. If it's a drive that you installed, try different drivers from the support site of the drive manufacturer, or use a bootdisk with cdrom support from bootdisk.com to see if that disk can access the cdrom drive.

Reply: (edit) I hope you are still reading this post. I keep sending you the files, and you email that you did not get them. What is happening is that I getthis email message after I send the files "From Mail Delivery Subsystem Subject: Returned Mail User Unknown" All I can figure is that MSN.COM will not accept email that contains attachments or they won't accept these files. Tonight I sent you the files. Then I logged onto AOL.COM where I have another ISP and sent you the files a second time with a similar result. So it must be MSN.COM or your address. You seem to get my emails that have no attachments. All I can think of is for you to email me a postal address and I will send you a floppy. I can't be sure the ASPI4DOS.SYS file will work however. It is for a 4 speed CD-Rom and is for an adaptec controller. Is that what you have? I think it might work as long as your CD-ROM is a 4X speed.

Reply: (edit)ASPI4DOS.SYS is not for 4X CDROM is generic for any device attached to that series of Adaptec SCSI controllers. There is also ASPI8DOS.SYS which supports most of the Adaptec PCI SCSI controllers. In addition after loading ASPI4DOS.SYS or ASPI8DOS.SYS you most load ASPICD.SYS (also adaptec). You then can load MSCDEX in autoexec.bat as with any other CD-ROM. Obviously if you do not have an Adaptec controller then things will be a little different but the process will be the same.
