Subject: networking with dos OS: dos 7.10 CPU/Ram: shouldn't matter

Comment: Yes, it's me again. I'm trying to figure out a way to put a computer with a dos OS on a windows network (or really any kind of network, for that matter). I tried using ms-dos network client, but for some reason whenever I open up the popup menu (with ctrl-alt-n), my computer freezes. Did anyone here use dos for networking purposes in college, or anything? I'll take any suggestions. Long live DOS, and down with computer illiteracy.

Reply: (edit)In standalone DOS, Network Client 3 works though you need to set it up with TCP/IP protocol and also set it up as both Client and Server to be able to communicate see: http://www.wown.com/j_helmig/dosclien.htm Though you need to undertake careful memory management, as it will lock up if I believe 400K base memory is not available. The best product to use is Lantastic which supports Windows and DOS: http://www.spartacom.com/products/lantastic.htm If you need to include Mac's and Unix/Linux then NWC3 is best, but Microsoft also produced LanManger prior to NWC3, which is avbailable though I have never used.

Reply: (edit)seanlemur wrote "or really any kind of network, for that matter" Windows XP does not come with NetBeui/NetBios as standard it is an add-on, IPX/SX is included but this is for Novell Compatibility. Apple Macs have since OS 7.5.x (I believe) have used MacTCP (TCP/IP) Unix/Linux use SAMBA which works best with TCP/IP I am reliably informed. TCP/IP is the WWW standard etc etc etc and did you also read: http://www.mwpms.uklinux.net & http://members.nccw.net/fmacall/ FYI the only current link out of the three you quoted is DOSSOLUTIONS

Reply: (edit)My suggestion is install Windows for Workgroups. http://froogle.google.com/froogle?q=windows%20for%20workgroups&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wf I am currently running it on my old 486 so I could get on the Internet (and it does) to download all those old games I wish I still had. Unfortunately, I cannot get IE 5 to work (it claims it can, but always gives me some cryptic memory error). Netscape 4.5 or something does work though. The biggest problem I had was finding a 100mbit card supported by such on old OS (8meg/sec transfers are hard to give up). I believe I used a 3C905, but don't quote me on it. Good luck! And yes, WFW with a good card and TCP/IP can use network shares on XP boxes (since NetBEUI was the protocol of choice preXP).
