hey, I know this is a dumb question, but has anyone seen a website to download the dosshell? I got out a dos for dummies since I can only acces my computer through dos on my d: drive (see need to fix xp through dos disk), and I just want to use the dosshell, even if only once.

Some reason you couldn't tell us that to start with?

DOSSHELL was providded with MS-DOS 5.0 to 6.0 then as part of the Supplimental Files for 6.2 to 6.22. All MS-DOS 6x Supplimental Files, plus DOSSHELL as a single download are available from my MS-DOS Resource Page. Just click on my PowerLoad UK Link above.

MS-DOS 5.x to 6.x is too old to use, and it doesn't support FAT32 drives/large hard disks at all. DOSSHELL is also available in MS-DOS 7.10 full version above, which fully supports FAT32 drives, large hard disks, and Windows 3.x/9x GUI!

I was only pointing out that if you wanted DOSSHELL without needing your 'Full Version' that it was available. For many uses 6.22 is as good as 7.10. Large Disk Support is its only real problem.

Your DOSSHELL is the same as mine - Version 6! Your MS-DOS 7.10 'Full Version' is little more than Windows 98 MS-DOS 7.10 with a install program and extras. Very nice as well I may add. But do not try to make out it is more than it really is.

Many 'older' DOS utilities work under FAT32 MS-DOS Help and DOSSHELL (which reads my Windows XP NTFS 30Gig Harddrive & DVD-ROM as well by the way via XP's DOS Emulater)

One of the major advanages of 7.10 over 5x or 6x is indeed FAT32 Large Disk Support (DOS up to 6.22 on supported 2GB's) and with the use of 3XSTART will run Windows 3.1 with no problems! Is your DOS Patched by the way?

Yes, of course. And it is more than 3xStart patched. No Windoze 98 logo inside anymore.

Nice page. Every version of DOS has improved versions of internal files, Its just a pity that Microsoft did not see fit to continue development of 'Standsalone' MS-DOS Even MS-DOS 6.22a for Embedded Systems is a rare beast, and that was the very last sub-version.

Development of MS-DOS will have now stopped altogether now that Windows (XP) has gone down the NT path.

Users still need a 'Standsalone' DOS and its a pity that they left that to PC-DOS with PC-DOS 2000 & DR-DOS 7.03 plus a few other smaller developers.

In fact, Microsoft sometimes tell people to upgrade their DOS to MS-DOS 7.10. For example, inside the file VMM32.VXD from Win98, you can find the following text:

"Cannot run Windows with the installed version of MS-DOS.

Upgrade MS-DOS to version 7.1 or higher."
