ok i got an old 286 from one of my dads co-workers for free. I know its old but i still wanna play around with it. The problem is that when i turn it on it says invalid system disk meaning that it was formatted and i need an old version of dos (3.3 would be good). I cant get a higher version that I know of that fits on 720k disks cuz thats all it can read. Could somebody tell me where I could find dos 3.3 or send it to me? I've tried some links from some of the posts on this site and if the link to the site worked the link to download dos didn't. thanks

Actually, DOS 6.22 is good, as I'm running it on my 286. Look a few posts down for a link to MS-DOS 6.22.

You could go with the micro$oft DOS 3.3, or you could go with FreeDOS. FreeDOS is compatible with MS-DOS 3.0 If you want to check out this OS, go to:

I'd go with 6.22 also. I used to run on it an old 8088 I had over here. Worked a heck of a lot better than the older versions of DOS.

As for getting it onto the hard drive. This is what I did for 6.22

I installed it on another computer.

I used pkzip for DOS to zip the entire DOS directory.

I then used pkzip to make a disk spanning archive. (ie spread the DOS zip file over several diskettes)

Then you just sys the hard drive on the 286. Pop disk 1 of your archive set in, and unzip it.

Works perfectly.

286 friend,
I have several un-opened MS DOS 3.3 complete
with books and anything else that is was included in the original package. The box lists that it contains both sizes of floppies. I will sell for $3.00 plus actual s+h.
