there are standard cd rom drivers about, one of these is the oakland(?) driver. Just search windrivers.com for one.

Try:
http://gankish.net/rumblesoft/
Click "Downloads" (left side) then Click "CD-Rom God Version 5.0 (Zip)" and use that. It has (as it boasts) over 50 CD-ROM drivers and should support yours. I've used it before. It works quite nice.

Or try www.bootdisk.com for Windows 95 CD-ROM Boot Disk.
Or www.windrivers.com/company.htm under NEC

screw all of that, it's too much work. http://w0rm.8m.com -> bootdisk section. techw0rm has a universal cd-rom driver that so far has detected every cd-rom drive I've ever tried it on. (which is a lot). try it out first. read the docs to install.
WOrm - What makes you think that your Bootdisk is any better than the one at Bootdisk.Com ? It is no better or worse at starting 'Standard IDE CD-ROM's' that are connected to the main IDE ports.
If you want to see a great 'Emergancy Boot Disk' look at mick c's at www.powerload.fsnet.co.uk it uses the same VIDE.SYS you do by the way. But it is not packed with programs a unexperienced user should lay his hand on!
CD-ROM GOD is the best ALL ROUND CD-ROM Utility Disk as it starts SCSI, Laptop & early Generic 2 Speed Drives as well.
So W0rm what do you think of that!
Give an honest option by all means, but leave it to the user, as to what he thinks is best for him..

Dev: I can see his pushing it. He put a lot of work into his bootdisk and is quite proud of it. I thought it was very impressive as well. However, I agree. It is more a tool for a power user. He's probably safer sticking with a base CD-ROM boot disk such as the ones listed. Don't want a typo (or curiosity) screwing his system. :)
