I don't know much like you guys about DOS, my friend got a very old machine, well, I can tell so coz he's running dos 6.22. He needs an upgrade but he got only 800M HDD thats what he told me. can he go up to win95 or 98. and where can i get win95 for him and does it come with a product key. help please

What are the specs on the machine? RAM? Processor? The 800 MB drive is too small to do anything more than Windows 3.11.
Need more details...

Win 9X is usually installed using the CD-ROM drive .If you are lucky enough, you could find these programs used and maybe on floppies for Win 95.Try the grey market, flea market sales, garage sales, etc. They may be found but ... this takes time just like collecting old furniture. Some technician around you may have a perfectly legal copy for sale. Try using the phone to contact a few.You can upgrade by installing like any other program using dos 6.22 already on the machine. Good luck.

I don't know about 800meg being only good for win3.1....
I've got Win98 running on my desktop (with 810mb HD) and my Tosh laptop (with 512mb HD). Everything works just fine, tho I've had to trim back some of the features to free up some disk space.

You can get first verion of Windows 95 at:
http://www.windos2000.net (If he's online)
Windows 95 will work on:
80386 Processor
4MB of RAM (Minumum) 8-16MB (Recommanded)
20MB of HD Space (Minumum Install) 80MB of HD Space (Full Recommanded Install)
Floppy Disk Drive
VGA Graphics Card and Monitor (Minumum) SVGA Graphics Card and Monitor (Recommanded).Download the Windows 95 Disks and copy them to your friends HD and run setup choose the options you need and enter any information as necessary and you will get a fresh copy of Windows 95.

???
I've got 95 running on a 500MB drive with plenty of space to spare.

The original 13 disk Win95 set only takes up 22 megs and contains 50 files, Installed, it's expanded somewhat but still leaves lots of working room on an 800mg drive. The machine isn't likely to ever be used for large file processing, like media or CAD, but will do lots of less demanding tasks.

Windows 95 works on a 386DX but not on a 386SX. To run windows as a practical matter with enough room to run applications, the dividing line is between Windows 98 1st and 2nd Ed for 800Mbytes. Windows 98 1st Ed installs in about 230 Mbytes.

I agree about, 800 is plenty for a low end machine on win95. But more info like CPU and RAM would be nice.
You can always use a windows CD (I'll leave it up to to to figure out where to get one) and temporarly install a CDROM drive for installation.

If you can't find the windows 95 cd or diskettes you can try ebay, last time I checked they had quite a bit. I got mine at the flea market but have not seen them there in a while. But your flea market might have some. If they don't try ebay.
Hope this helps
Jason
