Comment: I've spent hours trying to load my old computer up with windows after formatting the c drive - when I re-boot the computer does not recognise either my cd-rom or my c drive - displays an error message: invalid media type reading drive c, abort, retry, fail? Please please please could someone help me ... my stepson is wanting the computer for his college work, and the stupid thing is starting to eat away into my current holiday!

Reply: (edit)You should have used the /s switch with format to get the OS transferred on to the hard disk: A:\format c: /s But you can also use the Sys command from the A: prompt A:\Sys a: c: Getting the cdrom working means installing a cd-rom driver in your config.sys file. There are many threads on this board on that particular topic.

Reply: (edit)invalid media type reading drive c, abort, retry, fail? This error is not caused by the drive not having the system files on it. Usually, it is caused by: 1. cables not connected properly or connected backwards 2. BIOS settings for the hard drive are incorrect.

Reply: (edit)Thanks for your replies ... I havn't changed any bios settings for the hard drive, and to be honest I don't know the first thing about changing the bios. What are they and can I change them? By the way all the cables are connected fine, so the problem isn't there. I am just trying the format c:/s now - again I don't really know what I am doing. I have formatted the c drive before and loaded windows through floppy disks, but it doesn't want to take them either. No - still getting the same messages.

Reply: (edit)In addition to preston's post invalid media type reading drive c, abort, retry, fail? can also be caused by partitioning the drive and not reformatting it. try formatting the drive again, if this doesn't work check the bios settings and check the partitions with fdisk.

Reply: (edit) Checkout these things: 1. The C: drive is not formatted. 2. The hard drive is not registering and the CD-ROM is drive C: 3. Tha hard drive is too large for the operating system--but if you have accessed the drive before this is not likely.

Reply: (edit)In reply to Henny Thank you for responding. I have tried repartitioning the drive, and I still get the same message - according to fdisk the partitioning is a success. I also get the same error message when I attempt to fomat C: after partitioning the drive. I would check the bios settings, but I don't know what I am doing or what I am looking for. Perhaps you could give me some hints. In reply to Fred The computer is an old packard bell 586 with quite a small hard drive - so I don't think that the large hard drive theory is it! When I have formatted the C: drive before, it still did not recognise the cd-rom. And I think you are right about the format, because after I run fdisk it tells me to format the C: drive after re-booting - however, when I attempt to do this, it just gives me the same message. Sorry to be a pain ... any more suggestions or help with the bios settings would be much appreciated.
