When I try and run MS-DOS prompt from the desktop the screen just goes black and the computer hangs! Any ideas as to how I might fix this problem would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

This is a Windows DOS prompt? In Windows 3.1 it would be a PIF file problem. I don't know how later Windows handle that, but it is probably some kind of corrupt file.

Try running the DOS prompt from the start button (assuming you have windows 9X/Mill). Does it still do the same thing?
