I am trying to install MSDOS and DRDOS onto one drive w/2 partitions. Heres what happened. First, I installed DRDOS just to try it out on the system...really never played with it yet. It intstalled ok and functioned ok...I did get a boot loader for some reason.(???) OK..I decided to start over and partition the disk (41 meg) into 2 partitions. I formated both with a MSDOS boot disk. My goal was to put MSDOS on C and DRDOS on E (have slave drive with 2 partitions also). First question (and mistake??) was...do I format/s both partitions?? I did. I installed MSDOS 6.22 from floppys onto C...smooth...on reboot I got the error "IBMBIOS.ldr missing". I guess this was because of the boot loader that was there before from the former DRDOS install. Right?? Next I installed DRDOS...changing the path to E (I am a confused about where command.com path should be, but I made it E.) When watching the install through-out, I did notice some files going onto C..(temp files??) Install went smooth, but on reboot I got the same error (IBMBIOS.LDR) and MSDOS boots up fine, but BLAH! Thats not what I'm after..LOL!
DRDOS user manual says that it will detect if windoze is installed and it will set up a boot manager...does this not also apply for other versions of DOS already installed??Anyway, heres the killer system's specs:
286 with 0 extended ram (640kb)
41 mb drive (2 partitions FAT16)
270 mb drive (slave with 2 partitions FAT16)
A:1.44Floppy B:1.2 FloppySo how far off was I? Where can I find info on how to tackle this?
Thanks....oh, and I have a post asking if there is any sites that I can download early versions (or late) of PCDOS (IBM dos)...no one responds?.....hard to get? no one cares?lol
I

I think you`ll find that you require to install them on seperate partitions hidden from one another with a bootmanager to select which to boot from as at the momment your trying to have two different versions of DOS boot at the same time.

You will have to start over again. Format both drives and then run:
FDISK /mbr
to clear the old boot loader out of the master boot record. Now, install MS-DOS and then DR-DOS.

Thx1138 (great flick) that was my intention...to let a boot manager select the version of DOS to run. I thought that the DRDOS install would detect the other version of DOS and install its own manager.
Doofus, do I format BOTH partitions /s? or does the boot manager use C boot sector and get needed files from E?
I figured I would have to start over...I'll be back with either great results or more confusion! (most likely somewhere in between)
I

Yes, you will need to format both because MS-DOS writes it's own boot block and must be present for DR-DOS to see so MS-DOS must be installed fresh. DR-DOS needs to be installed again and, because of the setup routine, will not create a boot loader on a reinstall.

Yes...but what I need to know now...do I format the partition E as system 'format E:/s' ??????
Or just 'format E:'
I

Oh, just to claify. DR-DOS will install the hidden system files that make up the DR-DOS bootstrap to C:\. DR-DOS, itself, can be installed to e:\, of course.

OK.
Formatted C:/s
Formatted E:/u
at prompt typed FDISK /mbr
installed MS-DOS 6.22 on C
started install DR-DOS on E
I changed all install paths to E
When installation gets started, at the point where it is saving boot sector from drive E:, I get an error "saving of old OS was not successful."This sounded like it would be a breeze...but BLAH! lol!
????By the way, thanks for your help Doofus. Can you possibly see what I might be doing wrong?...besides playing w/old computers and not going to the beach.
I

My best guess is that the DR-DOS install saves the old configuration to memory during the install and then writes it to disk as the install finishes. I probably takes less than a MB of extended memory, but as you have none.... It really is a guess on my part as I have never installed DR-DOS on a 286. But as I have never had a problem with a 386 2MB/RAM and up, it seems like a reasonable conclusion.

I think you may be right. I installed again...this time also changing the command path to E:/DRDOS. It told me that install was not able to save existing (MSDOS) OS, but MSDOS still was fine and booted up. DRDOS files are all installed on E. So, I will try to play around with a boot loader and see what happens. Got any preferences when it comes to boot loaders for DOS? I have downloaded a bunch a while back.
I decided to install MSDOS 5.0 because I couldn't get WIN1x to load in 6.22.(just there to play with and show people for $h!ts & giggles.) WIN1x will not load in DRDOS...maybe the same version problem as with MSDOS 6.22.
If anyone is actually reading this string still...is there a way to turn up the volume for the PC speaker? I have a feeling that there is not since the voltage is what you get. But I had to ask....Had WIN1x Alarm wake me up today...I set alarm up to ring 10 times 1 min apart (all the control you get)LOL it took all ten. Need more vol!

Keep the Legacy alive and working!

It's been awhile but I've had the same problem more than once. I use a bootloader but still had problems. If I remember correctly, I solved the problem by making 2 partitions with some the disk wizard that came with the OS loader. Then there was the tricky part. I think that what I did was install dos622 first. Next I would install DrDos703 over it. Then I would hide that first partition (DrDos/622) and install msdos622 to the second partition.

"...some the disk wizard..."? What disk wizard? What OS loader? I am assuming that when you say hide the partition, you mean with the OS loader? (boot manager)?
I'm going to try all this on another board. Probably a little 386 board I have. I wanted to go minimal on this...shouldn't need extended RAM for such a machine. (Trying to get to the moon, not Charon!)
Just trying to play and learn about DOS, but for some reason when I tried to use editor to open the command or autoexec files it would say I was out of memory, yet I was able to play some DOS games and run W1x. BLAH! I expect a lot of liveware problems, but 'system' problems can add confusion ontop of confusion! So, I will try it with a bit of ext memory this time.I
