A few dys ago my computer went down. All i could get into was the Bios,by typing f1,f2 at the same time. I resent it back to origanal factory settings. This was the only way i could get it to work to load up my windows startup disk.
Now i have the problem of it saying:

Please wait while Setup initalizes.
Scanning system registry...
Cannot create a tempory directory.
If you have HPFS or NTFS installed on your hard drive you will need to create an MS-DOS boot partition to set up Windows.

I am running windows 98se, and it does have a 32 fat in it. I tried typing in FDISK, but it only came back with "no hard disk found".
This is agrrevating, considering that 3 days ago it worked just fine. Please help.

P.S. I wouldnot have made it this far, if it had not been for the help of Hummmmm.

If you go to bootdisk.com you can download a win98se boot disk with cd support or get a freind to make one on a win98se machine.

Glad to help.

Opps I should have ask first-
Does your bios recognise the hdd as being the correct size?

It also sounds like its a win95a startup disk that does'nt like FAT32.

You could try a
fdisk/mbr
or
sys c:
at the a: prompt once you boot from a win98 boot floppy.

Also
scanreg /restore in
the c:\windows directory. this gives you the option of going to an older copy of the registry, just pick the latest one.

You'll get there.

When I type in "fdisk/mbr" it comes back saying: No fixed disk present.
When I type in "sys c:" it says: Bad file command or file name OEMCD001 unit 0.

It is not letting me put in C:/ it says Invalid drive specification.

Thanks again for trying :O)

LOL........Not sure..kinda new at this bios thing. But i did get windows setup going, only for it to come back to me and say(on the blue screen):
Setup cannot install Windows98 on your computer. Your computer doesnot have a hard disk, your hard disk isnot functioning correctly, or your hard disk requires a special device driver. Contact your computer vender for service.

But when I run it on cd-rom support it says that ms-dos needs to be partitioned, or some thing like that. Think I will just put it in the shop tomarrow and save all the trouble. But darn...figuring these things out is kinda fun.....lol
Thanks for all your help!
Nanette

My plesure ;).

What type of pc is it?

If there is no hdd settings in the bios you'll get the errors discribe. Its best not to muck around with it unless you are sure what you are doing.

Believe it or not, I just tried to restart my machine after it had the power supply changed, and install a different hard drive, and I get the same problem! So that makes quite a few people with this prob.

Sounds like you all have a lot of issues with the hardrive. The bios (setup) controls the HDD by telling the processor what type it is. Ie... Cyl. Sector and size. If this is incorrect the OS (Win) will never see it. Ie No disk found (fdisk). There is one bad note in this story. There is a virus that will write in the Boot record on the hardrive and it will not see it. The best effort would be to contact the HD Manufacture (Western digital, segate or what ever) and get their diags. Look at the HD and see what the sector and cyl are and make sure the Bios says the same thing. This is a must...
