Comment:

I would like to know, was MS-DOS 7.10 released by itself? or with a different Windows OS? I would like to dual boot with MS-DOS 7.10 but don't know where to find the disks for it...

MS-DOS 7.10 download page is always available from the following address, including standalone full version and boot disks:

http://newdos.yginfo.net/msdos71/index.htm

Different Windows GUIs (3.x/9x) are available for downloads as add-ons for MS-DOS 7.10 on the same page.

For more information about what MS-DOS 7.10 is, please read the following thread:

NO....

MS-DOS 6.22 and under was released stand alone

7.0 Beta and released as Beta
7.0 was in 95
7.1 was in 98
8.0 was in ME

BUT, there is a MS-DOS 7.1, but it was NOT SOLD by M$ as a stand alone OS. Someone extracted DOS from Windows 98 and has it for download as stand slone.

IBM PC-DOS is still being made after 7.0 and 2000. PC-DOS 2000 has alot of extra tools I heard though

Last official release of MS-DOS as a standalone OS was 6.22 But Microsoft no longer support ANY version of Standalone DOS

PC-DOS 2000 is a Y2K corrected version of PC-DOS 7.0 But is let down by being only FAT16 with no Large Disk or Long File Name Support.

DR-DOS 8.0 has jusr been released as a Licensed Version, More or less a Large Disk and Long File Name Supported version of DR-DOS 7.03

Other retail DOS's to considder are PCS-DOS & ROM.DOS

You will find a run-down of available DOS OS's on my PowerLoad Site.

MS-DOS is really officially dead. I hope some non-MS-DOS will replace it completely on some day in the near future.

MS-DOS 7.10 standalone is legal with a Win9x
licence (as someone talked to M$).

Just keep in mind that DR-DOS 8.0 is a
FAT32-compatible DR-DOS bootdisk with all
other FAT16-only DR-DOS 7.03 files (without FAT32 or LFN support).

7.1 DOS is what ships with 95B and C, as well as 98 (FAT32 support)

Sure, WinDOS7.1 is from several releases,
so IBMWarpster should not say "7.0 is from
95, 7.1 is from 98" and something like
that. MS-DOS 7.10 standalone is legal with
the licence of any of these Win9x releases.

Interesting point re Win9x Licences Wengier!

But as with any OS or Software, you will need one for each active machine it is installed on (Including your main 9x PC) to remain legal.

This is more of an importance to a business users who is liable to software audit, than the home experimenter.

Good. For business users, a multi-user licence or multiple licences is needed so that it will be legal; but for home users, things are different: most people in fact seem to use software without any licence.
