MS-DOS 7.10 file browsing problem!

Comment:
I use MS-DOS 7.10 (Wengier & Roy's edition!) and Win 3.11 on top of it. It has been some time since something a little bit strange has happened to my system: DOS programs (such as EDIT), as well as some Windows ones, cannot browse within C:\ and "see" folders (they are just able to see individual files, i.e. root files outside folders). When typing DIR, for example, virtually no folders appear (just one or two folders that I created AFTER the problem had appeared!). However, other Windows programs (such as File Manager) are still able to see both folders located in C:\ as well as individual files, normally. Why is this happening? Can I do anything to fix the problem or do I have to re-install MS-DOS 7.10? Thanks in advance for any reply!

Are they hidden? Do a dir/a:h and see if they show.

Or have the system attribute? dir /a might show more than dir /a:h
Also, although this should be an obvious question, have you scanned your disk with scandisk?

alexanrs: You were right! Somehow the "missing" folders were all assigned the "system" attribute. Dir /a showed them all, then I was able to change the "system" attribute back to "archive". Everything worked fine... Thanks!

If you run Windows 3.1 on top of MS-DOS 7.1 (any version), you need to run it from a batch file, and from the root directory: ie
cd \ win31\win.com cd \ cls
This is documented in the Wengier web site.
