does any one have a version of ms-dos 7 that doesn't include windows or is there a way to sperate the two. what I need is the real leftout msdos.sys file for ms-dos 7. what I want to do is make the dos 7 ver command display ms-dos ver. 7 instead of windows 98se. is there away to do that. thanks in advance.

You need to use a HEX editor on a copy of command.com to change all the Windows 98se entries to read MS-DOS 7.10 (As this is 98se's real version)

Prince is right ,But make sure the number of letters is the same or use spaces, and remember that they are in hexadecimal.

BEFORE anyone trys to edit command.com (or any file for that matter) Make a backup copy first. In the case of command.com you cannot open it for editing if it is in use by windoze anyways.

Talking as one who has done this. I used NU.exe (Part of Norton Utilities) to edit COMMAND.COM It has 4 referances to Windows 98 which I changed to read MS-DOS 7.1 (Same string length of 10)I do not know which one displays as Version so I changed them all. Now when you start in Real DOS it Displays 'Starting Windows 98' the Displays MS-DOS 7.1 So far so good Next I edited IO.SYS and found the string 'Starting Windows 98' and changed it to 'Starting MS-DOS 7.1' Re-Booted and it works!

Create a Windows 98 Bootdisk or download one from www.powerload.fsnet.co.uk/bootdisk.htm and copy NU.exe from Norton Utility 4.5 (Avalable on Powerloads DOS page) and edit files on floppy disk. NU.exe has the option to search for text which makes life that little easer.

I did what you wrote on a Windows 95 bootdisk, and yes it does work. I did not think that it would, what with microsoft being big into data protection! I did notice that it had MS-DOS 7.0 in the code already. What is that for? It is really cool have a MS-DOS 7.0 startup message & VER reply, My freinds at work think it is a 'real' MS-DOS 7.0 disk, which of course it is!
