Comment: The only thing that appears on the screen once the pc is turned on is MISSING OPERATING SYSTEM...it does not let me go anywhere from there. Is there a way to get into the system???

Reply: (edit)Well, it was just given to me...so I don't know. I turned it on and the only thing that appeared was the missing operating system message. Not even an a: or C: prompt is given. Whatever I do it still turns up with the same message.

Reply: (edit)They probably wiped the HD before you got it. You need to get a dos boot disk. If you don't have one or can't borrow one I'm told you can find them at www.bootdisk.com. If it boots up ok then all is probably well and you need to find a dos full version, preferrably 6.22 and install it on your computer.

Reply: (edit) Sometimes a bad hard drive controller on a SCSI system will do that. It says missing operating system and won't boot past the controller bios even with a boot floppy. I know nobody said anything about SCSI, but if it is SCSI take the controller out of the isa or pci slot and see if the floppy will boot.

Reply: (edit)Hi. If you boot from a dos 6 disk (preferably setup #1) and hit F5 when "Starting MS-DOS" appears, you should be able to SYS the hard disk from there. Note that if the disk you SYSed from's version is different from the preinstalled OS on the hard disk, you may have to reinstall DOS completely, but SYS it to at least get it to boot.
