Hey Guys,

I have a NEC Ready 7020 Pentium 75 running Windows 3.11.

I loaded RealPlayer 5.0 on to my computer and got a general protection fault which kicked me out of Windows. When I tried to reboot the computer, I got the following message:

Non-System Disk Or Disk Error
Replace And Press Any Key When Ready

Problem was there was no disk in the a: drive.

I have done some research and I believe I have lost my io.sys and msdos.sys files. My question is:

Are the io.sys and msdos.sys files generic? Can I load any old io.sys or msdos.sys I can find on my system? Or do I have to get a specific io.sys or msdos.sys depending on my BIOS or system?

Foolishly, I didn't make a system disk for this computer.

My BIOS is PhoenixBIOS Version 4.04.7

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Bo Baber

I did a search of the c: in File Manager and it could not find the file. I did the same search on the system disk I am using (from NEC web page) and they popped even though they are hidden files.

Hi,

If you have system disk now you might have SYS.COM file on it. If you have such file boot from your system disk and type in:

SYS C:

to transfer system files from boot disk to hard drive. After that you will be able to boot from hard drive. But system files (Io.sys, Msdos.sys and Command.com) aren't generic. They are pertaining to specific version of DOS. So if your system disk has different DOS version then one you have on hard drive, you would not be able to use your old DOS files (Himem.sys, Format.com etc.).

God luck, Igor M

I think I may have deleted the
AUTOEXEC.BAT, & CONFIG.SYS
files on my 486 pc.
now when I restart the PC I have to
reset date & time, press enter & it goes to a
dos promt C:\ . But I cann't get into anything no matter what I type!
How can I fix the problem?
