Do a listing in your \dos dir:

C>dir himem.sys

if HIMEM.SYS doesn't show in your listing, check your bootdisk and/or installation files (if available) for the file, then copy it into your DOS dir.
If you've got himem.sys then put this line before anything else in your config.sys file:

device=c:\dos\himem.sys

then reboot. If nothing is wrong, you now can access upper memory blocks and can start windows gui.

try searching your whole hd for the file, try

dir /s himem.sys

if nothing comes up, give us a clue to your operating system, and we/i can send it to you.

Funny thing is that both MS-DOS 6x and Windows 3x both copy HIMEM.SYS to your harddrive (That is if you install from correct disks) To C:\DOS & C:\WINDOWS and Windows setup adds the autoexec.bat & config.sys entries for you! Again if you let it!

I ran a search of the whole entire drive, and I found himem.sys. How do I go about putting where it needs to be, and fixing windows, so that I can see it.

i also have missing "himem.sys" file and i cannot start windows98 in my IBM ThinkPad i series 1400.
To remedy the problem, I attempted to go to the Windows Startup Menu and and tried to enter the "safe mode-command prompt" but it seems that my keyboard does not listen to my command.

Please help. Thank you.

the only way I can get in to Window's '95 now is by booting it from a disk, after it's done booting, it show's the c:> logo, I type in window's but it says I'm missing himem.sys, I checked my window's dir and it's there but I think it's just corrupted for some reason, I tried typing in edit.config.sys at the c: prompt but the computer says that there is no such directory in the hard drive, if you have a solution please help me out, it would be very appreciated, I don't want to spend $100 to fix it.
