Microsoft Network Client v 3.0 for Dos;

I'm having trouble installing Microsoft Network Client for DOS. I need to get two computers (both running on Windows 98) to communicate in DOS. I want to install DOS Server capability on one of the machines, and to do that I need to install MS network client first. I've followed the instructions at http://www.helmig.com/j_helmig/dosclnt3.htm, which has been helpful, but I get stuck after telling the computer that the network configuration is correct. I get an error message saying it couldn't copy a mac or stack file.
What might be the problem is that I don't know what network protocol I'm using, silly as that sounds. The two Win 98 computers have network cards and are already hooked up to each other via a bus, simple, straightforward peer-to-peer. How can one tell what network protocol one is using?

In Windows 98, you should simply be able to right click on Network Neighborhood, then choose properties. A listing of all your adapters and protocols should be on that list. In all probability, you are using netbios over tcp/ip. What kind of network card are you using? I have several disks already created for a couple of network cards. I can send you a copy if you like.
