Does anybody know of a good tool to view and edit my MBR with? needs to be able to work with Dos, Win98, and Win2k.

My personal favorite is the Ranish Partition Manager. It runs under any version of DOS (use a DOS boot disk) and supports nearly all the FAT standards and the various MBR possibilities.

is there any special knowledge i need to use ranish. like is there a special mbr website i can goto to figure out how to edit the mbr.

You really shouldn't be messing with the MBR directly. If you do mess with it, you should know how to restore it. To restore the MBR you need to boot from a bootdisk and at the dos prompt type
fdisk /mbr
then press enter. There are two MBR's on the disk and typing this command will replace the first with the backup. You do have a bootdisk don't you?
There is a program that comes with ms-dos or windows. It is called DEBUG.exe. Learn how to use debug and you'll be able to look at and edit Programs and Sector's on disks, floppy or harddisks.
You do need to know Hexadecimal and mnemonics to edit a program or binary file.
