I am haveing some trouble accessing all the files in a folder on this machine. I can pull the drive out and drop it into my windows box as a secondary and I can access all teh files in windows. My question is ths, is there a limit to how many it can read in a folder? or is it purely an amount of megs that is the limiting factor? I have over ten thousand files in one folder all jpg gif and txt/html pages and was wondering if theres a way around this without creating more folders.

The maximum number I've seen in a W98 machine was about 28,000. Access under DOS is slower because of the number of accesses needed to read the directory. Assuming 4K clusters, 128 files per cluster (32 bytes per file name), 10,000 files would need about 80 clusters just for that directory. Assuming you are not fragmented and having 8 buffers it would take about 10 reads to find the file if it was at the end. Access would be much faster with a proper folder structure.

What, exactly, do you mean by that?

what I mean JBOY is I have just over 10,000 files in one directory and everytime I change to that directory it throws a error reading directory only first 3350 files read or some dam* thing like that. and sometimes a html page that pulls a picture from that same directory wont show. I would change it if it was easy, but rewriting massive quanties of html pages by hand is not what I had in mind. in case you were wondering, its a home built three dimintional color maze game with picturs that I wrote as a project. anyways it works in windows98 sooo I I guess I dont need to play it on my dos machine.

wizzard, thanks for your input. that could be it, and at teh time it was created on the windows computer file structure didnt seem to be a problem, I knew it wasnt right when I did it but it made for easier and faster creation of the html pages as it was all done without an editor.

anyways, thak you both for your input and since this is not very important (not life threating or money making) I end this question.

Well, ODIE, that's great - but no, I really wasn't wondering about the rest - although your creative spelling is quite... charming ('dimintional' was my favourite mangling)

"it throws a error reading"

mm'kay - fine, thanks for clearing that up

Odie: This is not English class, but throughout life good English is preferred. Your's may be far from the worse, but the forum is a place to communicate. And if the posters communicated better, maybe the answers would be better. The reason I answered is because I have runup with same problem before. Actually depending upon how you arranged the hierarchy of your levels and your naming convention, it may be possible to rewrite your files, as well as moving them to the proper subdirectories, by using a program to parse through game levels. jboy's pen might be sharp and but has provided moments of humor, I'm sure the intent was not vicious. "it throws a error reading directory"

The actual text of an error message is probably the most important fact people can use to work out what might be going wrong.
