some mother boards can do the low level format, try to seek for it in the bios setup of your machine.
if it is not there, try to get in thouch with western digital, usually the hard disk sellers provide their customers with utilities like that.

Have you tried just reformating with format.com? If so did it make any difference?

Norton Disk Doctor might be helpful if you can find a copy. It's available in a trial version from http://www.symantec.com, but I'm not sure if they have a Windows version available to try for free. If the sectors are truely bad, no formatting (even low level) is not going to restore them.

Take EXTREME caution when formatting and IDE drive! If the drive did not come with a low-level format utility, do it only at your own risk. Low-level formats re-write the HD tracks. This works wonderful on SCSI drives, but on IDE's usually causes most of the drive to be unusuable.

Go to www.wdc.com. In the support section you will find a utility file that will correctly low level format the drive, it will also trouble shoot it if it fails under5 warrenty and gives the info to return to the manufacutere for replacement.

Low-Level Formatting

This is the process of physically setting up the locations of sectors so user data can be stored in them. Because
Western Digital hard drives are low-level formatted at the factory, you do not need to low-level format them.

This is what I found at Western Digital's site... Try to contact them...

Hi,

Bad sectors are phisical defects of hard drive magnetic layer. So if you really have the bad sectors (not just data corruption which you can remove by format) the only thing you can do is to replace your hard drive.

Good luck, Igor M

I suggest you do a search for "Drivepro" software, i have used this on many hardrives and their utility is very good and safe, it has two low level formats 1)low level, 2)destructive, it works well and it is a reputible company as well, but like everything else take caution and BACKUP YOUR DATA!!
Good Luck

There is a great utility that does a low level format and will test each sector of your hard drive. It will test the bad sectors and return them to a running condition if they test good. The software is called Spinrite, and available at www.spinrite.com. It costs $90, which is kind of pricy, but it really does a good job.

I had the same problem here's what you do. If you have the ez-drive software its real easy, just pop in the disk and restart your computer then follow the instructions on the screen and WRITE TO ZEROS. If you dont have this software go to Western Digital's homepage, go to service & support, then go to drivers & utilities and down load a copy of Data Lifeguard Tools (formerly ez-drive).

Listen. There is NOTHING You can do but to buy a new hard drive or return the current drive for a replacement if it is still under warranty with the retailer you purchased it from or the manufacturer. Retailers will usually have a 1yr warranty. However manufacturers have a 2yr to 3 yr warranty on their drives.

Hi there,
I've got a GATEWAY200 SOLO Notebook pentium 133Mhz was orginally installwinNT3.51.
Now I want to format the hard drive to install win95 by floppies(because it does not have a cd rom). Unfortunately I can't delete the NTFS patition and I can't get into the bios setup mode as it asked for the password from the floppy disk which I don't have a disk and forgot the password.
Please help me or give me the "back door" password for Phoenix bios or show me how to install win95 over the NTFS partition, or how to do a low level format as some one told me that it will fix the problem.
Thanks in advance.

I have a CONNER 2.1 GB SCSI drive that has one partition"NETWARE/386", not DOS or WIN.9X. There were twin SCSI Hard Drives on the system, but now the "Master" boot disk is gone and I cannot recover any data from it. DOS does not "see" the NETWARE/386" disk, Win9X can see the disk but cannot write to it. What drivers do I need to load to be able to low level format and re-partition the disk, or should I throw both SCSI drives away?

Hi there.
I've got the same problem as many of the others.
(sorry 'bout the spelling - danish and english don't work very well together)
I installed Linux RH6.1 on a 4.3GB Quantum Fireball SE (as far as I remember *no label*)
Now I want to install both win98 and win2k while I have Linux. I know that I have to installe the two MS-OS first, but my problem is that I can't delete/erase Linux. I've tried with 'fdisk' - not working. Then I tried to find a Low Level Format-util that could erase RH. But I can't find a DOS util (I need one of these because win98 and win2k aren't installed). Fdisk finds the hhd (where linux is installed) but can't erase the logic drive/extended/etc etc.
Someone how can give me an URL where I can find a dos-util for low level formating ?
