Comment:

I have a Program called chainsaw that cuts files down to fit on a floppy disk. The only problem dos 6.22 cannot read the long file names. Example
Seal2.bar from 2,374kb to
seal2.bar.chunk1 1,368 kb and
seal2.bar.chunk2 1,007 kb and

seal_merge.bat 167 kb

chunk 1&2 are read as the same in dos 6.22 and it will not let me put them in the same folder. seal_merge.bat puts them together.
How do I get dos 6.22 to tell the difference between chunk 1&2? I tried xxcopy and lfndos from powerload and they were giving me errors. I also tried lfn but could not figure it out. I need this 2,374 kb file on my computer.

Have you tried renaming them to DOS 8.3 filenames, copying them, and then editing the batch file to use the same DOS 8.3 file names?

Use MS-DOS 7.10 + DOSLFN 0.32m,then long file names will work almost perfectly.

How is that going to work on an old computer with dos 6.22?

If DOSLFN 0.32m is loaded in MS-DOS 6.x,DIR can't show long file names at all.But if DOSLFN 0.32m is loaded in MS-DOS 7.x,many commands, such as DIR,COPY,DEL,etc, will work with long file names.

Im sure I left a message here? Maybe I made an error in saving!

Have you tried PKZIP 2.50 for DOS? The latest version from www.pkware.com supports LFN's in a MS-DOS 7x/Win9x environment. But how they would extract under MS-DOS 6.22 I do not know...LFN's will be saved, but if they are recoved? Testing will find out!

The major advantage of PKZIP over Chainsaw is that files are compressed as well as spanned over more than one floppy disk.

I would rename file under 8.3 format, Compress and save as Disk Spanning and recover under 6.22 with no problem or use of LFN to start with!

I found an Unzipper for dos called unzip.exe.
PKZIP isn't free is it. I ended up taking out a couple files and rezipping the already zipped file and transfering to old dos 6.22 then unzippin into a folder. Then I grabbed the leftover files - the text ones and coppied them to the same folder. If you haven't guessed the program I was trying to copy was seal 2 a gui for dos. It didn't seem to work so well. It ran slower than win3.1. It seemed like a good idea but either something didn't work right or the program doesn't support what it says. I found it a Powerload. My computer is 486-66mhz 16meg ram 850meg hd.

I have tried Seal myself direct from http://sealsystem.sourceforge.net/about.php
I found it OK!

PKZIP is not free. But it is available as a fully featured 'shareware' download so for one off use it may as well be!

Glad you found a way to transfer file, even if it was not to your liking. You may well want to try this again someday with some other program.

Best wishs. Dev
