The first DOS disk is usually a boot disk. Turn the power off, put the first disk into the drive and turn back on again, it should then re-install DOS for you. You may have to change some settings in BIOS setup first, but just try what I said first then post back if it doesn't work.

oh s---! this is one of the nastiest messages to ever plague the computer. in fact I had it today (dont ask).

luckily, you were setting up a cd-rom drive and i'm assuming you went into bios, disabled your hard drive, and enabled your cd-rom drive. go back into bios (press "del" or "f1" or whatever it asks, to enter "setup" on boot up). make sure that your hard disk is set up.

if your hard disk is set up, then you have a serious problem. you dont have a master boot record. when that gets deleted it generally means you lost other data with it.

if it isnt enabled, enable it, and you should be good :)

I also have an opperating system installation problem.
I currently have NT 4.0 on my machine. I would like to remove and replace it with Win 98. When I try to run the Win 98 install I get the message "Set up cannot run from within Windows NT. Shut down NT... start MS DOS and then run setup from MS-DOS command prompt.

My problem is the only way I can get to MS-DOS is from NT. When I start up my computer DOS is not listed as a choice for opperating systems. I can go to the task bar and shut down NT, but then I have no control over the machine.

I also tried to uninstall NT, I couldn't figure out how to do that either.

Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks

ING
