I'm trying to load this game: The Teletransport Smurf. It's a 1995 game so it worked in Windows 95 through DOS. Now, though, it doesn't work through Windows XP. It comes up with "NO EMS". I went to the readme file and it says when "NO EMS" appears check for the following:

-----------------

*Do you actually have more than 512Kbytes EMS? To check, run the utility MEM. This program will tell you how many EMS bytes there are.*

*If you don't have any or insufficient EMS memory and you are not using QEMM check that the program EMM386.exe is in the CONFIG.SYS file. To do this use the text editor to EDIT <EDIT CONFIG.SYS>. The following line should appear in the listing: DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.exe.*

--------------

But, being a child of Microsoft Windows I don't know what an EMS Byte is, I don't know what the programme MEM is and I don't know what QEMM is.

I tried downloading the file EMM386.exe but that had no effect whatsoever. Does it need a driver behind it? When I tried to open the SMURF.exe file through the Windows XP command prompt a DOS window opened saying something about a driver and then closed itself quickly.

I'd be really grateful if somebody could help me out here. I realise this isn't standalone DOS but I thought nobody would know much about this stuff in the Windows XP forum!

EMS is 'expanded' memory.

If you believe the MEM report in w2k/XP, there is no EMS provided.

There is no DOS in NT either.

EMM386 is used by DOS to provide EMS [and XMS] through config.sys; which is ignored by NT.

Your best bet is the XP forum. And a good subj might be something like:

Smurf won't run bla bla

If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.

Yeah - getting the game to work in XP, if possible, will require an XP solution (not a DOS one).

Other options include an emulator or else setting up an old machine with Win9x or DOS etc.

Set up a short cut for the game - select a compatibilty mode and tell it what memory requirements you need in the shortcut properties.

Rule #1 Good computers don't go down.
Rule #2 There is no such thing as a good computer.
