Which 8Gb barrier is that?

Other than FreeDos, most versions are still commercial products and not for legitimate download - although DRDOS can be used by individuals. Micro$oft stopped releasing DOS as an Operating System in 1994 (6.22), although the embedded "Dos 7x" from Win9x can be used standalone

Some history here

Not much (if any) advantage to installing more recent DOS versions on a humble 486

Seriously, MS-DOS 4 from 1988????

MS-DOS 6 was limited to FAT16, 2Gb - - so what you're saying is.. odd.

"I want a DOZ which reads more than 8 GB or an overlay software"

Hmm - - well, ok

Maybe we can be of more help if you explain what your DOS (DOZ?)4 can't read more than 8GB of.
RAM? HD size? File size?

Usually when they claim it's "DOS 4" that turns out to be the Windows version.

There are a couple of 8 Gig barriers - although that's certainly more than I would have suspected on a 486

It's best not to use overlay software. If your BIOS recognizes the whole 20GB hard drive, you can use partitions to use the rest of the hard drive.

Another solution is a BIOS upgrade. Also there were BIOS extender cards that increased the BIOS limit from 8GB to 32GB. The last time I saw them they were a clearance item for $5.00.

This is the card.

It was originally made in 1999-2000 to fix the Y2K problem.

I think a more feasible solution is to get a newer motherboard. An early Pentium motherboard could probably be found for a very low cost.

George - you've yet to fully explain what version of DOS is running on this 8Gb (or 20) 486

I take it you were confusing 'dos' with 'bios HD size limitations'.

The BIOS Shows the size of the HDD is only 2 GB.But DOS (Made form the Startup Disk from Windows 98 SE).Shows it as 8 GB.The Version is 4.0 .Is Linux Better than DOS

I'm not familiar with linux but I imagine that comparing it to dos is like comparing apples to oranges.

Typing ver at the dos prompt after booting from a 98 bootdisk will give either

Windows 98 [Version 4.10.1998] or
Windows 98 [Verison 4.10.2222]

depending on which version of 98 you have. Is that where you're getting the version 4 from? If so, that's completely different than MS Dos 4.0.

It's odd that the bios would see the drive as 2 gig but 98 sees it as 8. Is it actually and 8 or is it a 20 gig?

"The Version is 4.0 "

Sure it is - - the Windows version though, not the DOS version (I think I mentioned that once already).

I'm beginning to suspect that the OP doesn't really know the difference between the BIOS, DOS or Windows

It is fairly easy to find the dos Ontrack disk manager. The IBM version of same is free and should help you create the DR-DOS based boot diskette to get an overlay installed giving you full access to the hard drive.Look for dc957.exe on this page.

For a recent version of dos working on most systems look for setup diskettes of Wengier dos.
Good luck.

2GB in BIOS and 8GB on DOS 4.

Now THERE'S a concept.
