large hard drive partitions under DOS

I have DOS 6.22, an AwardBIOS version 4.51, and a 3.1GB harddrive. How do I set up CMOS (or other device) to recognize my large hard drive and divide it into partitions up to 2GB in size? Presently DOS sees only about 500 MB of the hard drive; the 500 MB can be partitioned into smaller logical drives, but the rest of the hard drive (beyond 500 MB) is not seen at all; it cannot even be partitioned into other logical drives.
