Laptops halts when started...Need help!!!!!

I got a toshiba laptop that when started nothing happen..sometimes it will boot and sometimes not, was told it was motherboard. But The battery is also no good it need a new one and im running off ac power only.. does anyone know if battery is needed to power hard drive???????? Thanks for any help ......

battery is only needed when it is not plugged into a power supply!

If it boots sometimes, and sometimes not, the problem is probably that some cables are loose. If you haven't done it already, open you computer and make sure all cables are tight.
If not, your CMOS battery may be dying. Replace it. You power battery has probably nothing to do with your problem.

I encountered cases when a dead main battery prevents starting the laptop, even if the AC adapter is plugged in - one of them being a Toshiba (something with StelitePro, I think). Replace the main battery (since you need to anyway) and then try again. I think your problem will be gone.

i've seen this 1/2 dozen times and is caused by dead or defective battery every when plugged into the a/c outlet. replace battery..problem should go away. good luck,
