we got this free Laptop and this Laptop has no Cd-drive .When we try to start the laptop we get the C:/ so i guess the DOS is loaded(though i donot know the version).and also stops with this message "cannot find Backup cd drive connected to printer port"
First of all what is the meaning of this.
Secondly we want to load windows on the Laptop using some external Cd-drive.
THe laptop has USB as well as Parallal ports.
and also PCMCIA port.
I tried to connect the external cd-drive via USB port but the dos didnot recognise the CD-drive at all.(may be as DOS doesnot support USB interface).
But to load windows to my Laptop using PCMCIA port we need proper drivers s/w's right? Can anyone tell me how to load OS on to a laptop that has no CD-drive.??

If you have a laplink or crossover cable you can use Laplink Pro (a small dos prog that will fit on floppy) to access the remote pc. You then copy the setup files (the winme directory of your cd) to the laptop and run setup from there.

I have no idea how to use the external drive in dos, you would probably have to find and download the correct dos drivers for your model and then get them loaded via the config and autoexec files.

You can make a laplink cable from a straight thru parralel cable available at officemax or walmart. look here for instructions

http://www.geocities.com/ResearchTriangle/System/2014/llra.htm

you will then need laplink (look above for location)

good luck

Why on earth you would "make" a laplink cable is beyond me. A PARALLEL port laplink/null/direc connect cable is faster than a SERIAL port cable but some machines are fussy to set up and get working. I'd get a serial cable IF the machine has one.

Ask for a "Direct Connect, Laplink, PcAnywhere or Null Modem" cable. ANY decent store with computer accessories will have one. Look around, you can download laplink3 "ll3.exe" was at Mick's Powerloads, other places--a small, one file program will run right from a floppy and allow you to transfer the setup files.

ALSO, you can buy a drive cable adaptor to adapt the laptop hd to your PC (may have to remove the drive from it's carrier) and copy/transfer the setup files that way.

WHAT model is your external drive?

There is no setup for laplink pro, plug in both pc's with the cable and run the prog on both machines and laplink will connect for you.(I have 2 floppies setup for this)
You are right you can buy either a serial or parallel crossover cable somewere, but I had trouble finding one.
The advantage of parralel over serial is 4bit data transfer as opossed to 8bit, either would work.

Hi Sonny,
I tried to buy a crossover Cable from the Internet but found Cables with many options like
Cat5e,Snagless,No boots.
I really dont know whether i need all these whatever these keywords imply.
I was wondering if u could help in picking out a crossover cable which i can use to connect my Laptop to my Desktop

Thanx
