So? Are you intending to install DOS on it? That'd really be the only reason to inquire here. You don't actually say what you intend to install.

Does it have a CD drive?

I presume you are not aware that MS DOS is
not an integral part of Windows 2000,
therefore unless you propose to install
standalone MS DOS or compatible which
requires a standard floppy drive, you are
in the wrong forum. Natively USB is not
supported by MS DOS unless the Laptop BIOS
has the boot from USB floppy feature.

Always post the "full model" of what you are working on, and what you are trying to do.

Is W2k what you are trying to install?

Saying "Armada" is like saying "Ford."

Now, there are only so many ways to bootup a computer.

Some will boot from a network/ROM, etc, very rare, especially laptops.

Usually, you can boot from the hard drive, or the CDROM, or the floppy.

Evidently yours will not boot from the floppy.

Does it have a CDROM and have you tried to boot from it?

If you are indeed trying to install W2K, then your W2K CD should boot.

If you have an "OEM" CD for Whenox98, says something like "For distribution only with a new PC" or similar, then THAT CD should be bootable.

Otherwise, you need to investigate being able to remove the laptop hard drive, and buy an adaptor which will allow you to hook the hdd temporarily to a desktop IDE port.

@name@ nice response, but if it is nothing to
do with MS DOS standalone and compatible
then the Poster should be requested to
repost in another forum rather than
encouraging all and sundry here.

What forum did you have in mindless?

I don't see the questions about which operating system he uses on his other working system having anything to do with being able to boot the diskette-less laptop that does not yet have any operating system. So its not an other operating system question.

Surely not any of the Windows OS forums, for they are for the OS, not basic hardware setup problems that relate to BIOS options and booting to say a DOS prompt and running FDISK and FORMAT. And people in other OS forums are only interested in that specific operating system's problems, not basic BIOS and booting stuff. DOS is based on and runs on the BIOS, so any basic booting problem from a diskette and BIOS setup is a DOS problem, regardless of what OS one intends to run later.

So I assume you want him to address the issue over in the General Hardware forum where they are only concerned about fixing system boards and power supplies, or some other web site all together. Should have politely pointed him/her in that direction.

Humm.. I seem to recall now why I seldom bother to look at this hijacked forum any more, WWW I and flamethrowers.

A simple instruction on getting into the BIOS CMOS Setup and selecting the option to boot from the CD, and finding a bootable CD with DOS or something on it would do.

Couldn't quite hear what you were saying... don't be shy, speak up! That's better, eh?

If it's such a bother, why post here at all?

I'm not insensitive, I just don't care.

1) Just because I do care.

2) Have had to help several old friends recently get around the same problem with replacing the PC DOS 7.00 on their old laptops, after they got no where getting useful help in on line forums.

3) And this is a great place for reviewing insensitivity training.

The poster states W2K

He then states that he needs drivers for
USB floppy which is not supported under
BIOS.

Then he asks about his Desktop with a NIC

Sorry if you think we are harsh but this is
either the W2K or Driver forum on above
info. But considering he can not boot the
Laptop and therefore does not really know
the O/S I would point it to General
Hardware, and yes they do answer questions
there as there was a posting about hard
drives on a 386 and the poster was using
DOS/W3.x.

So ******** to everyone and can we have the
MS DOS and compatible forum for lets see
maybe MS DOS and compatibles ????

Heh - well Jake, I'm glad this place is at least of some limited value to you. I gather that the ME forum isn't all that captivating.

I hope your old(?) friends gave you the pat on the back you were craving.

I'm not insensitive, I just don't care.

Jack G you wrote and I quote

"DOS is based on and runs on the BIOS"

well that about sums up the level of your
knowledge..........as BIOS is O/S independent.

That JAck G quote must be from another thread.

Jack G seems pretty smart.

Quick quiz question:

What's the difference between two PCs, each with an 8086 CPU, one of which will run Japanese DOS but not English DOS, and vice-versa?

[Hint: The main difference, besides the paint job on the case, is the BIOS.]
