Hi,

I installed a new hard drive on my laptop (IBM Thinkpad 560). It was previously running Windows98. Because I plan to purchase an external CD-ROM drive and reinstall Windows98, I wanted an OS on the machine in the meantime.

I did something foolish. I installed Windows 3.1 as a temp OS. After rebooting the machine, I got a message that Windows couldn't load because of my old version of DOS and I needed to insert a boot disk. I also got the FAT32, SMARTDRV info etc.

I still have my 6.22 disks if need be but a friend told me that I should install DOS 7.

Several opinions have raised these questions:

a) Should I install DOS 7? Will it allow me to do so at this point?

b) Install DOS 7, buy the CD-rom and be sure it has a "point enabler" which will allow me to painlessly install it via DOS.

c) Where will I be if I use a boot disk?

OR, should I just remove the battery, hard drive and start all over?

Help! Thanks in advance,

Del

Why don't you re format the hard disk! That would erase the old DOS and Windows. Then install ONLY DOS 7 and then Win 98.

Guys you are DUMB! MS-DOS 7 only comes AS PART OF Windows 95/98 You install Win9x by use of a CD-ROM Boot Disk to run CD-ROM. YOU DO NOT need to install DOS First. (The Boot Disk is in fact the MS-DOS 7 System Startup Files!)

Wise Up.

If you need a Windows 95 or 98 CD-ROM Boot Disk goto www.bootdisk.com
