Have installed ME and and done the necessary patch work to get Dos back, only prob now is, that the keyboard does not give me the symbols it should when I type, for example, I cannot get the '~' or'@' letters to work, my keyboard works perfectly in all other programmes it's only in Dod window that it fails, I feel I need to make a change in the Dos window itself, am I right?? Any help would appreciated.

I dunno if it's the same in ME, but in all other DOSes it's the KEYB command you have to use. I don't know what country's keyboard youv'e got, but for gettin the amercian version, type:

KEYB US

or for swedish

KEYB SV
KEYB FI
and so on...

typing KEYB /? should give you all options (I'm not able to try cause I'm at school and can't access the dos prompt!!).

Just posted this a few minutes ago on another thread. Things may be different with ME Dos, but anyway, these are the settings I use on my Win98 system.

You need to re-map the keyboard layout to use the correct key codes for Dos and need to add one line to your config.sys and one line to autoexec.bat

Try putting this line in your config.sys file:

Country=044,850,C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\country.sys

The "044" number refers to standard international code for the UK. You need to use the code for your own country.

In your autoexec.bat file insert this line.

keyb uk,,c:\windows\command\keyboard.sys

I hope this helps, but I'm not sure. Even the hacked ME is different to Win98.

I had the same problem with win98 and ME with an incorrect keyboard language layout whenever I used a DOS prompt.

The solution:
Start -> Run -> MSCONFIG

Change the settings on the language tab to what you desire (I had French Canadian and wanted standard U.S.). Et Voila! No messing with config.sys nor autoexec.bat (it ignored my changes anyway).

It's nice also in that you can modify (and remove) tasks that stay memory resident on the start menu bar.

Cheers!
