You really don't need a Japanese version boot disk to to format the drive. Just use an ordinary English boot disk (you can get one from www.bootdisk.com if you don't have one already) and when you are prompted to label the volume at the end of formatting just press[Enter] for none. The full version of Japanese Windows 95 is on floppies (upgrade is on CD), so you are good to go. If you would like to have both the English and Japanese versions of Win95 on the same system, here is some help from the experts:

Embassy of Japan, Japanese and English on the same PC

yeah, I JUST installed Japanese Windows 95 on my computer... I actually used Partition Magic to make the FAT16 partition I needed, but then I ran the install from an American boot disk.

The problem was that every time you install windows it's supposed to run scan disk from the CD to check your hard drive, and the version of dos on the boot disk wouldn't allow that scan disk to run.. but it really didn't matter much at all, just pres ESC and skip the scan disk and it still installs.

miyagawa, I have Win95/J on my Thinkpad 535 Japanese bios, sold by in Akihabra by ADO T-Zone. The Win95/J is a bit different than Win95 US version, having Japanese Keyboard support and the command.com is different as well. If your laptop is LISA or PC-9800 Series, that is a different Architecture than the PC/AT IBM architecture of laptops sold in the USA. Some of the Hitachi Japanese Bios do not work the same as US bios manufacturers, as the architecture is also unique, such as 1.21 & 1.25mb Floppy disk drives, as opposed to US 720kb & 1.44mb (2mb drive). So, if you still need Win95/J, I can email it to you, since it is not on www.bootdisk.com nor any Japanese website, that I know. I also have Win98 and NT Japan version, but not Dos/v which I would like to have.
