Batch files are very useful to know about, definitely worth learning.
Is DOS finished?
Well probably but there are still a large number of people who use it so I'd have thought that it'll still be around for quite a while.

DOS batch files are still used for scripting in Win2K and Win ME, so yes, batch is well worth learning. Here's a page to help you on your way:

Batch is great! Almost anything can be done with batch files, and they are really fun to write, too. Truly the worlds best kept computer secret; at everyone's fingertips, yet virtually unknown to the masses. Go for it! You will amaze yourself (not to mention everyone around you).

batch comes in useful to understand how os's work. Unix and linux are easy to understand if you understand dos batch files programming.

I dont think dos is dead yet, windows hides too much functionality to allow dos to go under.

DOS is far and away the most popular OS ever. Every Win 95 or Win 98 installation runs atop DOS. However, per M$'s propoganda machine, we're spozed to "ignore the man behind the curtain". Windoze ME replaces the curtain here with a brick wall, but guess what ? DOS will still be there.

'Member, Win 95 and 98 are just DOS programs.
